Why Your Dog Stopped Eating, and What Actually Works
A dog that stops eating is not automatically a picky dog. Some of it is real appetite loss that needs a vet the same day. Most of the rest comes down to four feeding habits, and those can usually be turned around inside a week.
This is the sequence we would work through, in order, before spending money on a new food.
If your dog has refused all food for 24 hours, or is eating less alongside vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy or a change in drinking, see a vet before you change the food. If your dog is bright, active and simply turns down meals it used to finish, the usual causes are treat calories, a bowl left down all day, dry food with very little aroma or moisture, and Singapore's heat. Fixed 15 minute meal windows, weighed portions and food that actually smells like food fix most cases.
First, rule out the things that are not fussiness
Appetite is one of the earliest signs something is wrong, so it is the first thing to check rather than the last. Book a vet if any of the following apply.
- No food at all for 24 hours in a healthy adult dog, or 12 hours in a puppy, a toy breed, or a dog on medication
- Eating less along with vomiting, diarrhoea, or drinking noticeably more or less than usual
- Interested in food, walks up to the bowl, then backs off or drops it. That pattern often points to mouth or tooth pain rather than preference
- Weight coming off, dull coat, or lower energy over two to three weeks
- Any dog over seven that goes off food without an obvious reason
Periodontal disease affects 80 to 89 percent of dogs over the age of three, and a sore mouth reads exactly like fussiness from the outside. Worth ruling out early.

What "picky" usually turns out to be
Once health is cleared, refusal at the bowl is nearly always one of four things. Work through them in this order, because the first two are free to fix.
1. The treat maths
A 10kg dog needs roughly 400 to 500 kcal a day. Two dental chews, a few training treats and a corner of toast can account for a third of that before dinner is served. A dog that is two thirds full is not fussy, it is full. Count everything that goes in for three days, treats included, and the picture usually explains itself.
2. The bowl that never leaves the floor
Free feeding removes any reason to eat now rather than later. It also makes it impossible to tell how much your dog actually ate, which matters when you are trying to work out whether there is a problem at all. Two set meals, down for 15 minutes, then lifted whether it is finished or not.
3. The food has nothing to smell
Dogs decide with their nose. Dry food is extruded at 130 to 180°C and finishes at around 10 percent moisture, which is why most brands spray palatants and fats onto the outside of the kibble after cooking. When that coating oxidises in an open bag in a humid flat, the food stops smelling interesting long before it stops being edible. Gently cooked food sits at around 74 percent moisture and carries its aroma in the food itself rather than on a coating.
4. Heat, timing and routine
Appetite drops in the heat. A dog fed at 2pm in an unairconditioned kitchen will eat less than the same dog fed at 8am or after an evening walk. Cold food straight from the fridge also lands badly. Both are easy to change.
What actually works, in order
- Clear the medical side first. Everything below assumes a vet has ruled out pain, nausea and dental issues.
- Cut treats to under 10 percent of daily calories for two weeks. This alone resolves a surprising number of cases. Use a portion of the actual meal as the training reward instead.
- Two meals, 15 minutes, bowl up. No topping up, no hand feeding, no swapping to something else because the first thing was refused. Swapping teaches the dog that refusing produces a better option.

- Serve food at room temperature, not fridge cold. Take gently cooked food out 15 to 20 minutes before the meal, or stand the pack in warm water. Warmth releases aroma, which is the part your dog is responding to.
- Then, and only then, change the food. If the routine is fixed and the portion is right and your dog still eats reluctantly, the food itself is a fair suspect.
Why single protein and real moisture help a reluctant eater
Two things change how a meal is received: how much of it smells like the animal it came from, and how much of it is actually meat rather than starch and coating.

A picky dog will notice a fast switch and dig in. Go slower than the standard advice, and warm each meal.

How long can a dog go without eating before I worry?
24 hours with no food at all is the point to call a vet for a healthy adult dog. For puppies, toy breeds, senior dogs and any dog on medication, make that 12 hours. A dog that is eating less but still bright, active and drinking normally is less urgent, but still worth a check if it runs past two or three days.
Is my dog picky or is something wrong?
Picky dogs are usually consistent about it. They refuse the bowl, then happily take a treat, a chew or something off your plate, and their energy and weight hold steady. A topper works in the short term and often makes the problem worse in the long term, because the dog learns that waiting produces something better. Will changing to fresh food fix a picky eater?
It removes two of the common reasons for refusal, low aroma and low moisture, and single protein recipes make it easier to isolate what your dog will and will not eat. It does not override routine problems. A dog that is full of treats or grazing from a bowl left out all day will be reluctant with any food.
