RER (Resting Energy Requirement)

RER is the energy a pet needs just for basic survival functions like breathing, digestion, and maintaining body temperature, when at rest. It's calculated using the pet's body weight in kilograms (kg).

The most common formula is:

For pets between 2 kg and 45 kg, a simpler formula is sometimes used:

However, the 70 * (BWkg)^0.75 formula is generally more accurate across all sizes.

MER (Maintenance Energy Requirement)

MER (also called Daily Energy Requirement or DER) is the total calories a pet needs in a day, accounting for their RER plus their activity level, age, reproductive status, and overall lifestyle.

To get the MER, you multiply the RER by a specific MER factor. These factors vary:

Category Dog MER Factor  Cat MER Factor
Neutered Adult 1.6-1.8 1.2-1.4
Intact Adult 1.8-2.0 1.4-1.6
Growth (Puppies/Kittens) 2.0-3.0 2.0-3.0
Gestation (Pregnancy) 1.6-2.0 2.0-3.0
Working Dogs 2.0-8.0 N/A
Inactive/Weight Loss 1.0-1.2 0.8-1

The formula is:

These calculations provide an estimate; individual pet needs can vary. Always monitor your pet's body condition and adjust food intake as needed, ideally with veterinary guidance.
